Bells Beach is a famous surf beach with huge waves and is home to the Rip Curl Pro surfing competition in April. I was originally looking for accommodation in Apollo Bay, but Im really glad we ended up 15 minutes outside of town in the hamlet of Wongarra. stay for about 1 hour and leave at 12:30 pmdrive for about 51 minutes, 1:22 pm Jan Juc Benefit. Its rather a touristy experience as the tour buses stop here and the cafe sells bird feedthe colourful parrots are so tame they hop all over the tourists. Split into colour-coded sections to help you find exactly what you are looking for quickly and easily, the map includes viewpoints and lookouts, campsites and campgrounds, the major towns and holiday destinations, waterfalls, beaches - even petrol stations(!) Back on the Great Ocean Road, the next section is quite different as it follows a more inland route and alternates sections through the forest with vibrant green rolling hills and farmland with fields of cows and sheep. Great Ocean Road (6 mentions) We spent the first two nights in an incredible cottage overlooking the ocean at Points South by the Sea, a 15-minute drive before Apollo Bay. What used to be a swamp was reclaimed and turned into these pretty gardens in 1858.

(Seriously!) Its a small village, but Port Campbell is a nice place to stop for a snack and some fuel.
This connects to the more distant, and much quieter, Living on the Edge walk (to the right of the car park) where you can see Muttonbird Island and enjoy more gorgeous coastal views. Points South by the Sea is the perfect place to stay on the Great Ocean Road; in fact, its one of our favourite places weve ever stayed. One of the best walking tracks to visit here isMelba Gulleywhich is full of gorgeous giant fern trees and home to glow worm caves, which are best seen after dark. As its a fairly leisurely drive why not break up the short journey and enjoy the sights of the Victorian Surf Coast along the way. We saw two koalasone sleeping (which they do for up to 22 hours a day) and one munching on leaves (which they do for the rest of the time). It starts in Torquay, which is 105km (65 miles) from Melbourne, and continues westward along the coast to finish at Allansford near Warrnambool. These unique and adorable local animals call this spot home and have been known to use the lake as a nesting ground when having babies so best to keep your eyes peeled. Its worth a quick stop to admire the surfers riding the waves from the viewing platform above. We had two partly rainy days and the rest were sunny with varied temperatures. Other lunch options are Movida which was recommended to us for tapas or The Swingbridge Cafe is right on the beach. Jan Juc Although officially the Great Ocean Road starts in Geelong, Melbourne is the ideal start to the trip as it provides the contrast of a big city with the quiet of the small towns dotted along the Great Ocean Road.

The drive from Lorne to Apollo Bay is the most scenic section of the Great Ocean Road. We had lunch and found the vegetarian options a bit limited if you didnt want cheese, but the food gets good reviews from meat-eaters. If you're planning a road trip to Lorne, you can research locations to stop along the way. 8am-fly in, pick up car, drive to 12 apostles (inland route) 12.30- visit 12 Apostles, lunch ect, 2.30-Back on the road 5- Arrive at Lorne. 2pm Check into hotel. Happy travels. What is a partial cave, archway and blowhole, The Grotto is definitely something to marvel at. Its a lovely place for a short stroll. Just down the road is Hopetoun Falls. Make sure you visit first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon for the best koala viewing times. Thats how were going to structure this post for you. hi guys my husband and l are going to drive the great ocean road in early November. The whole trail is about 15km, but your best chances for spotting the cute indigenous animals are about 6km in atGrey River. I cant recommend Points South enough. One of the best things to do on the Great Ocean Road is going out for a paddle at some of the most famous surf beaches in Australia. Yes, even this step is optional, because if you're on vacation Trippy is where The inland route via Ballarat and Bordertown is faster, but the Great Ocean Road is an incredible experience.

You will pass the Twelve Apostles on the way to Port Campbell, but its very crowded mid-afternoon so we left it for the next morning.
Simon had a reusable coffee cup but wished hed had a larger flask for our early start at Twelve Apostles (the kiosk there doesnt open until 10am). If you only have one day, its going to be a long trip, so you might consider taking a tour so that someone else does the driving.
Cant wait for the trip , Thanks Tracy. The downside of taking a tour is that youll never escape the crowds. Split Point Lighthouse is still a functioning lighthouse, so you can only go inside on a tour. I think 3 days/2 nights is the minimum amount of time for a really enjoyable trip. This stone archway once formed a natural bridge over the gorge, but unfortunately collapsed almost a decade ago. Highlights include the Telegraph Station, World War II Radar Bunker, whale viewing platform (we had no luck), and the lighthouse itself, which you can climb. From the car park, there is a short trail that will lead you right to the viewpoint where youll be gifted with the most incredible sweeping views of Apollo Bay and the coastline.
